This deep crimson juice is as therapeutic as it is beautiful. Beetroot’s dietary nitrates convert to nitric oxide, relaxing and widening blood vessels. Hibiscus’s anthocyanins inhibit ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) — the same mechanism targeted by a class of blood pressure medications. Together, they form one of the most powerful natural cardiovascular tonics you can make at home.
Ingredients
- 2 medium beetroots, scrubbed and peeled
- 2 tbsp dried hibiscus flowers (or 1 strong-brewed hibiscus tea, cooled)
- 1 cup boiling water (to steep hibiscus)
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled
- 1 cup cold water or coconut water
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional — improves circulation)
- Ice to serve
Method
- Steep the dried hibiscus flowers in 1 cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain and allow to cool completely (or refrigerate for 30 minutes).
- Chop the beetroots into chunks suitable for your juicer or blender.
- If using a juicer: pass beetroot and ginger through the juicer, then combine the juice with the cooled hibiscus tea, lemon juice, and coconut water. Stir and season with cayenne if using.
- If using a blender: blend beetroot, ginger, and coconut water until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve or nut milk bag. Combine the strained juice with hibiscus tea and lemon juice.
- Pour over ice and drink immediately for maximum nitrate benefit.
When to drink it
For best results, drink this juice in the morning on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before a meal. Nitrates from beetroot peak in the bloodstream 2–3 hours after consumption and can lower blood pressure within the same window. Consistent daily use over 4–6 weeks produces cumulative cardiovascular benefits. Avoid brushing your teeth immediately before drinking as oral bacteria are needed to convert nitrates to nitric oxide.
